Ana Schurmann

Composer, singer-songwriter and recording artist based in Europe. Two catalogues in one artist: a commercial one — singles, an EP, orchestral versions, thirteen music videos, BBC Radio, a Deezer No. 1 — and a classical, scientific one: the first composer to translate gravitational-wave detections from the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA observatories into orchestral score, certified by ITA and INAF. Nine languages, eight instruments, one of them her own.

The instrument — the Neck Lyre

A wearable seven-string multi-instrument in gold and diamonds, tuned to the Schumann resonance at 7.83 Hz — the electromagnetic frequency of the cavity between the Earth’s surface and its ionosphere. It is played on the body, and it is the lead voice on Peacemakers. It exists because the music needed a sound that did not exist yet. Forbes Brasil covered it in March 2026 as the first scientific instrument made as haute jewellery.

Why scientific music changes the game

Most “space music” is a mood. This is a method. In The Harmonic Universe the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA catalogue — every confident detection of the first three observing runs — determines the pitch material and the order of the movements. Nothing is tuned by hand: the data writes the score, and anyone with the catalogue can check it. That makes the work reproducible in a way music almost never is, and it gives a label a story that is true, verifiable and first.

It was built in formal collaboration with researchers at Brazil’s Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, presented live at the IXI EFITA, certified by ITA and by Italy’s Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, with the support of the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA Collaboration. Observatories, universities, planetariums and science festivals are a concert circuit no pop artist has; the press — Forbes, Vogue, BBC, Corriere — has already followed it.

And it is not a side project. The same ear made Whitkeys a No. 1 on Deezer Italy and Tell Me a BBC record. One artist, two catalogues, one method: take something invisible and physical, and give it a form a human body can receive.

The goal

Ongoing scientific-music album, one movement per field, each decoded with a PhD scientist from that field — a nucleus with a nuclear physicist, a symmetry group with a mathematician, the zeros of the zeta function with a number theorist, the gravitational-wave catalogue with an astrophysicist — every dataset carried through the same published pipeline, so that what stays the same and what changes between systems is itself the composition.

Beside the album, an open database of the systems sonified: the spectrum, the mapping, the audio and the code for each one, versioned, so any result can be reproduced by anyone and any new system added by anyone. That database is the instrument.

And out of it, explaining the remodeled music theory. Not scales inherited from one tradition, but the pitch structures already present in the patterns that predate us — the level spacings of matter, the ringing of black holes, the distribution of the primes. Scientific music is the music of everything that came before us. The aim is to write it down, systematically, scientifically, for the first time — and to release it as records people play.

Every detection is a movement

Every detection is a movement

The Harmonic Universe treats the LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA catalogue as one continuous composition in chronological order. Below is every confident detection of the first three observing runs — 90 events, from GW150914 on 14 September 2015 to March 2020 — placed by date and total mass, from the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center. Touch a detection to hear its chirp, synthesised from the chirp mass in the catalogue; play the whole catalogue to hear the universe in the order the symphony does.

Nine languages, recorded

Portuguese native; English, Spanish, French and Italian fluent; German, Japanese and Mandarin conversational — she interviews in ten and sang Love Forever in eight. For an Asian market: she can speak to an audience in Japanese and Mandarin herself. Vogue Brasil covered the nine-language video when it went viral in Europe.

14

Research

Beyond the symphony, two published computational studies sit on the site under Science. Audible Cartography runs one analytical pipeline across an atomic nucleus, a symmetry group and the zeros of the Riemann zeta function, and turns each spectrum into sound. Shells, Ladders and Noise (Phase 1, September 2026) puts nuclear shell spectra through the same statistics as harmonic ladders, billiard eigenvalues, stellar oscillations and random matrices — with null results published beside the positive ones and every plate drawn from the data. A listening experiment lets anyone test their own ear against the mathematics.
